Blog Post #1

Blog Post #1
So recently, I read this newspaper article about hazing in US universities. And for those of you who dont know, I quote from the article, "Hazing is a practice in which a person is subjected to humiliating, degrading and abusive treatment by members of a group he or she hopes to join." Sounds quite scary doesnt it? This is the first time I read and knew about such a thing that happens in a country half the globe away and it is sad to know that somewhere out there in the world, such things are happening. So I did my research and I read about more incidents of hazing and I realised that the students in the US, they probably dont see the harm and the dangers "despite the number of deaths linked to it".
And a lot of times, I think that you know, say for this case, from my postition, I see how hazing is wrong and it's such a horrible practice. But maybe from a student of US universities position, they see it as a normal thing, like it's part of their culture, everyone's doing it. So, to them, maybe they dont see the severity of it and they dont think it's wrong. And this leads me to think about the literature lessons I had this year.
We were learning about African Americans and we were doing To Kill A Mockingbird and reciting poems like Strange Fruit. We learned about the discrimination against African Americans and lynchings. And similarly, I also thought about how wrong lynching was and how could people just discriminate against the African Americans just because of their skin colour. But putting myself in that postition that time period, I dare not gurantee that I would not be prejudiced against the African Americans. Why? Because everyone is doing it. And I'm not the kind of person who is strong enough to stand up for what I think is right. Or perhaps, maybe at that time, I wouldnt even regard my doings as wrong.
And so I'm not quite sure what the conclusion of today's blog post is. But I think maybe we should all not be too quick to judge.
